When an offering includes one or more scheduled sessions, choose the class type that matches how you want customers to take part. A Workshop is a special or one-off group session. A Course is a term or multi-session run sold as one whole course.
The short version: choose a Workshop when customers choose and book sessions individually. Choose a Course when one enrollment should cover the whole run.
Quick comparison#
| Workshop | Course | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | A special or one-off group session, including a short intensive | A term or multi-session run |
| Customer flow | Customers book each session separately when the workshop is covered by a class pack | Customers enrol in the whole run |
| Whole-run setup | Use a class pack with one credit per session and connect it explicitly to the workshop | Use How it's sold > Whole run |
| Single-session tickets | Use the Drop-in sales section for a single class | Optional setting: Whole offering + single-session tickets |
Use a workshop when#
Pick a workshop when the individual dates can be chosen separately.
Good fits:
- A special or one-off group session
- A weekend intensive where customers choose the sessions they want to attend
- A multi-session workshop sold with a pass and one credit per session
For a multi-session workshop, create a class pack with one credit per session and connect it only to the workshop. Customers then book each session separately. Buying the pass does not reserve the sessions automatically.
For the setup steps, see Creating Bundles & Packages.
Use a course when#
Pick a course when the term or run is the offering and customers should enrol in it as a whole.
Good fits:
- A multi-week class that builds from session to session
- A school term with a defined set of sessions
- A run where one enrollment should cover every included session
The current Course setup describes one purchase as covering every session of the term. A course uses the Whole run sales section rather than the workshop pass flow.
Creating a course#
The current admin UI does not provide a reachable standalone pricing flow from a new draft. On a draft course, Set course price is disabled until the course is published, while publishing requires an enrollment price. Do not use these controls as a fresh standalone-course setup path until your studio's flow is verified.
If the course is sold through a Program, use the program's own setup. The course page shows that sales channel and says that the class needs no product of its own.
Course enrollment settings#
On the course page, open How it's sold > Whole run and select Edit enrollment terms. The current Course enrollment dialog includes:
- Purchase mode: choose Whole offering or Whole offering + single-session tickets.
- Package holdback: set how many seats are reserved on each course session for whole-offering purchases.
The dialog describes course enrollment as covering the whole course and reserving each session at once. Review the options shown for your course before saving them.
What courses cannot do#
A course's Whole run setup is not the same as a workshop pass. A workshop pass does not reserve sessions when it is purchased; customers book its sessions separately. Use a workshop when that session-by-session flow is the goal.
If you want a course to offer individual tickets as well as the whole course, check Purchase mode for the current Whole offering + single-session tickets option.
Still not sure?#
Ask what the customer should choose at checkout:
- If customers should select individual dates and spend a credit per booking, use a Workshop.
- If customers should enrol in one defined run with every session included, use a Course.
Common questions#
Can I change a class from a workshop to a course later?
The current Class Settings page can lock Class type when the class has connected products or customer activity. Choose the type before you build the sales setup, and follow the lock message if the control is unavailable.
Does buying a workshop pass reserve every session?
No. The current workshop guidance says customers book every session separately, one credit per booking.
What does Whole run mean for a course?
The current Whole run section says that one purchase covers every session of the term.
Can a course offer single-session tickets?
The current Course enrollment dialog has a Whole offering + single-session tickets purchase mode. Check the course's Edit enrollment terms control to see and choose the available mode.
Can I add more sessions to a course?
Use the series controls described in Managing, Extending, and Deleting Class Series, then review the course's schedule and sales setup.
