A class has a default Instructor. New sessions inherit that instructor, and you can override the instructor for an individual session or a range of sessions.
How teacher assignments work#
The Instructor in class settings is the default for new sessions. Open a class session from the class details page to review its current instructor or change the assignment.
Scheduled teacher vs actual teacher#
The product labels this field Instructor. In practice, the class default and the instructor on a session can differ:
- The class default is inherited by new sessions.
- A session can use a different instructor. Class details can show Class default when the session has an override.
- You can add Additional instructors and choose Co-instructor, Assistant, or Guest for their role.
The visible product label is Instructor even when a session is covered by someone else.
Changing the teacher on a class#
Open the class session details and select Change next to Instructor. Choose the assignment scope that matches the change you need.
What happens when you change a teacher#
The change flow offers:
- Substitute for this class — changes only the current occurrence.
- Substitute for selected dates — changes the current occurrence through an end date.
- Permanent from here on — applies the new instructor to future occurrences. After saving, review the class default and upcoming sessions to confirm the intended scope.
You can also add additional instructors to the assignment and choose their role.
When to change a teacher#
Choose the scope that matches your situation:
- One-time coverage: select Substitute for this class.
- Coverage across a range of dates: select Substitute for selected dates and set the Through date.
- A permanent schedule change: select Permanent from here on, then review the class default and upcoming sessions after saving.

Impact on payroll#
